Penaeus vannamei shrimp is one of the most productive farming crustaceans species in the world. Since 2009, a new emerging disease in P. vannamei shrimp called early mortality syndrome (EMS), or acute hepatopancreatic necrosis syndrome (AHPNS) has caused serious economic losses in shrimp farms in China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and most recently Mexico. In China, the output loss in Hainan, Guangdong, Fujian, Guangxi and other provinces / autonomous regions was close to 70-80% in the past few years. This disease causes more than one billion USD economic losses globally every year. By using a laboratory challenge model, a unique strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus had been identified as the causative agents for AHPNS.

As a novel tool for the biological control of EMS/AHPNS, phages have many advantages compared to the traditional antibiotics. In Phagelux bacteria library, more than 800 strains of V. parahaemolyticus isolates were obtained from the shrimp pools in southern China, of which 150 pathogenic strains of V. parahaemolyticus (carrying toxin gene PirA and PirB) had been identified. In Phagelux phage library, more than 45 lytic phages had been isolated for the control of EMS/AHPNS caused by V. parahemolyticus.
